Supporting young entrepreneurs

In Michigan, the Battle Creek Chapter of Credit Unions donated $2,000 to Junior Achievement of Southwest Michigan to use toward educating students in grades K-12 about entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial literacy through experiential hands-on programs.

Caring for the community

New England FCU, Williston Vt., donated $10,000 to the Community Health Centers of Burlington. CHCB plans to use the contribution toward its mission of health care for the whole community.

Neighborly behavior

For the ninth time, Neighbors FCU, Baton Rouge, La., sponsored WBRZ’s “Pat’s Coats for Kids.” The event raised a record $100,251, and collected 7,000 coats. All money and coats went toward providing warm clothing for children in need.

Helping kids in crisis

The Foundation for Northwest FCU, Herndon, Va., held its first ever Kids in Crisis drive, collecting more than 2,000 plush toys, blankets and other comfort items for local first responders to provide to children in crisis situations.

'Fill'er Up'

San Antonio-based Air Force FCU presented a check in the amount of $2,500 and donated more than 500 lbs. of food and non-perishable items as part of the “Fill’er Up for the Fisher House” food drive for the Lackland Air Force Base Fisher House.

Emergency room expansion

Workers CU, Fitchburg, Mass., made a $100,000 donation to benefit the UMass Memorial HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital Emergency Room’s expansion initiative on the Leominster Campus.

'Pass It Along'

West Jordan, Utah-based Mountain America Credit Union and the Utah Jazz named 5 For The Fight as the third recipient of “Pass It Along,” a program featuring fan nomination opportunities that rewards five local charitable organizations with $5,000 each. 5 For The Fight aims to raise funds to accelerate the pace of innovative cancer research.

Furry friends

Members and employees of ABNB Federal Credit Union, Chesapeake, Va., donated numerous items to benefit local non-profit animal shelters throughout Hampton Roads.

Reality check

Empower FCU, Syracuse, N.Y., hosted Mad City Money, a fun and informative financial simulation that allows young people to take on the role of an adult in futuristic Mad City, where they got a real world “financial reality check” complete with: occupation, salary, spouse and/or children, student loan debt, credit card debt, and, auto and medical insurance payments.

Bigger and better

Germantown, Md.-based Montgomery County Employees FCU opened a new, full-service branch in Silver Spring, Md. The credit union said Silver Spring was selected as a prime location that would allow it to serve existing members and grow the CU with new partnerships/members.
