More Mergers Announced
EL SEGUNDO, Calif.-The $750-million Xceed Financial FCU is absorbing via merger the $77-million Safeway Los Angeles FCU, which has reported losses for five straight years. SLAFCU's branch will become an XFCU branch. In Clawson, Mich., meanwhile, $24-million Clawson Community CU is being merged into $452-million Detroit Metropolitan CU. In North Andover, Mass., $450-million Merrimack Valley FCU has acquired one branch following its merger with $7-million Merrimack College FCU. And in Denham Springs, La., members have approved the merger of $95-million Main Street Financial FCU into $280-million Jefferson Financial CU. In East Lansing, Mich., $2.3-billion Michigan State University FCU will absorb via merger the $30-million Eaton County Educational CU in early 2013. In Dearborn, Mich., the $140-million First Catholic FCU is merging into the $250-million Michigan Catholic CU to form Alliance Catholic Credit Union

UHCU Named Tops
AUSTIN, Texas-United Heritage CU was named as a 2012 Top Workplace by the Austin-American Statesmen and WorkplaceDynamics, a Pennsylvania-based employee engagement research firm. This marks the third consecutive year United Heritage has been awarded the Top Workplace honor.
Stearns Moves To Filene Institute
MADISON, Wis.- The Filene Research Institute has named Tansley Stearns as its new director of innovation applied research and be responsible for transforming research and innovation into action. Tansley began her career in credit unions more than 14 years ago and was most recently AVP-corporate strategy and government relations at Bethpage FCU in New York.
Copies of Book Available
MADISON, Wis.-Copies of the book "Money Rules: The Simple Path to Lifelong Security," by personal finance author Jean Chatzky are now available from the National Credit Union Foundation. The NCUF said organizations can order the book for a reduced rate to distribute to staff, members, attendees at community events or financial ed events, and more. Altura Voted 'Best Credit Union'
RIVERSIDE, Calif.-Altura Credit Union has been named "Best Credit Union" by readers of The Press-Enterprise in its 17th Annual Readers' Choice Awards.
'Black Wednesday' Volume Strong
MISSOULA, Mont.-Despite steady rain, Montana First CU said more than 80 people filled out applications for its "Black Wednesday" loan, which offered a 1.50% APR on refinances for secured loans and 3.50% APR on refinances for unsecured loans and went up 0.25% every half an hour between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. that morning. Folks were greeted with hot coffee, pastries, gift bags, and free donuts. Of the total applications received, over half were from non-members, the credit union reported.
CASE, Option 1 Share Branch
EAST LANSING, Mich.-CASE Credit Union and Option 1 Credit Union said that beginning in early 2013 they will share a facility on West End Road here. The facility, which belongs to Option 1, has excess space that CASE CU now needs after having to exit space it has inside a Meijer store following that company's decision to partner with a national bank.
Federation Launches 'The Bridge'
NEW YORK- The National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions has introduced an e-magazine, The Bridge. Distributed as a quarterly publication, The Bridge will share specialized information, strategies and sustainable approaches for credit unions providing services to low and moderate income consumers, the Federation said. "The Bridge" was also the name of the original newsletter published by CUNA when it was formed in the 1930s. For info: www.cdcu.coop.
Nutmeg FCU Adds Branch On Wheels
ROCKY HILL, Conn.-The $340-million Nutmeg State FCU has added a 20-foot mobile branch that includes a generator and back-up cellphone towers. The mobile branch will be availabe in emergencies, and be used at various events.
