CU Miracle Day Wins Wegner
MADISON, Wis.-Credit Union Miracle Day has been named winner of the 2013 Herb Wegner Memorial Award for Outstanding Program. CU Miracle Day is a family of races that benefit Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.
CU Miracle Day started with the 2002 credit union sponsorship of its now flagship event, the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run in Washington, D.C. In 2011, CUMD expanded to a family of races, adding the new Credit Union SacTown Ten-Mile Run in Sacramento, Calif., and two Freedom Runs for American troops overseas, including one at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait and one at Wiesbaden Army Garrison, Germany, all held on or around the same day.
To date, Credit Union Miracle Day has generated over $5.5 million for 136 Children's Miracle Network Hospitals across the country. CU Miracle Day will be honored at the 2013 Herb Wegner Memorial Awards dinner in Washington in February.
Ex-Employee Charged In $780K Theft
TUCSON, Ariz.-An accounting employee at Pinal County FCU has been identified by authorities in the embezzlement $780,000 from the Casa Grande credit union. Federal authorities allege that Jennelle Curtis, who worked as an accounting assistant from 2002 to 2012, stole the funds by writing out large checks to herself. The alleged theft allegedly occurred between 2008 and December 2011.
CUES Wins Four APEX Awards
MADISON, Wis.-The Credit Union Executives Society received four Awards of Excellence in the 2012 Awards for Publication Excellence (APEX) competition. CUES won awards in the in the Marketing and Public Relations Campaigns, Programs & Plans category; in the Illustration and Typography category; in the Design and Layout category, and in the Content and Design category.
Lending Awards Deadline Approaching

Perlman Named CEO At RAY FCU
KEARNY, Ariz.-RAY FCU has hired Adam Perlman, who started his credit union career as a volunteer on the credit committee, as president of the $5.5-million CU for miners. Perlman, who was the manager of Compliance and Regulatory Affairs for the Credit Union Association of New Mexico, is still working as the interim CEO of Chino FCU in Silver City, N.M., and is traveling back and forth between the two jobs.
Staatz Elected Chair of MDDCCUA
LINTHICUM, Md.-Rod Staatz, president and CEO of SECU has been elected Chair of the Executive Committee of the Maryland and District of Columbia Credit Union Association.
Wis. State Charters Boost ROA
MADISON-State-chartered credit unions in Wisconsin grew net income by 83% in the first six months of 2012 compared to same period last year, according to the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions. Net income totaled $101.8 million, up from $55.6 million in 2011. The increase was fueled in large part by a 28% increase in "other income" and an 11% decrease in provisions for loan loss expense, the DFI said. Through June 30, Wisconsin's 194 state-chartered CUs posted average ROA of 0.90%.
BizKid$ Box Set Available
MADISON, Wis.-Box sets of the latest season of Biz Kid$ are now available from the National CU Foundation (NCUF). Biz Kid$ is the Emmy Award winning and credit union funded public TV series that teaches kids about money management and entrepreneurship. Earlier this year, NCUF made available the first four seasons of Biz Kid$ as DVD box sets. Each Biz Kid$ box set includes DVDs for each episode and a CD containing PDFs of the corresponding curriculum for each episode.

United Catholic CU Is Liquidated
TEMPERANCE, Mich.-The Michigan Office of Financial Insurance Regulation (OFIR) has closed United Catholic Credit Union here and appointed the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) as liquidating agent. The credit union was found to be operating in an unsafe and unsound manner and was declared insolvent.
Noll Named CEO At Securityplus
BALTIMORE-The $363-million Securityplus Federal Credit Union has named Brett T. Noll as its new CEO, succeeding Richard Williams, Jr. Mr. Noll has spent the past 12 years at the $1.7-billion Langley FCU in Newsport News, Va., where he was SVP and chief marketing officer.
Fort Financial, FMFCU In Merger
FORT WAYNE, Ind.-Fort Financial CU and Financial Members FCU, Auburn, Ind., have received regulatory and membership approval to merge, with FFCU the survivor.
