TACOMA, Wash. Sound Credit Union President and CEO Richard Brandsma will be recognized as the Business Leader of the Year from the University of Washington Tacoma’s Milgard School of Business.
The award will be presented at a dinner on April 30 at the Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center.
Brandsma joined Sound CU (formerly Tacoma Telco FCU) as president and CEO in 1981. At the time, the credit union had one branch, 26 employees, and $18.9 million in assets. During his tenure, the credit union has grown to 21 branches, 230 employees and more than $1 billion in assets. Brandsma has led the credit union through the transition from federal to state charter and through 14 mergers, including the recent merger with Watermark, the largest credit union merger in the history of the state.
“Rick Brandsma has guided our credit union with vision, insight, and expertise,” said Dave Wasson, chairman of Sound’s board of directors. “We are proud that he has been selected for this recognition; he represents the best of leaders in our industry.”
“As the regulator for Washington state credit unions, I’ve worked with Rick Brandsma for many years. Through his strong leadership and vision, Sound has grown to be the seventh-largest credit union in the state. He is a top-notch professional, passionate about helping his community, and runs a financially healthy credit union. I am pleased to see a credit union leader nominated for this prestigious award,” said Linda Jekel, Director of Credit Unions for the Washington State Department of Financial Institutions.
