MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa -- Doctors have released the Marshalltown Police officer who suffered a gunshot wound to the leg during a police chase following Friday morning’s armed robbery at Lennox Employees CU.

Officer Vern Jefferson responded to a call that two men, identified as Ben Crisantos, 22, and Abel Ramirez, 22, both of Marshalltown, were robbing the credit union. During a short foot chase, Crisantos allegedly turned and shot Jefferson in the leg with a handgun in the backyard of a home near the credit union. Jefferson returned fire, striking Crisantos, according to police.

Cristantos, who was shot by Officer Jefferson during the chase, and Ramirez, were arrested and charged with first degree robbery and Cristantos was charged with attempted murder.
