DURHAM, N.C. – In response to a shift in policy by the Obama Administration, Latino Community Credit Union has moved quickly to create a “Dreamer Loan” aimed at students who qualify for Deferred Action.

Deferred Action is a new federal government policy that applies to as many as 1.7-million young, undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States illegally as children and who can now apply for temporary, renewable immigration relief and work permits. Latino Community said its new product is designed to help keep anyone from being left out because they do not have the money to pay the $465 application fee.

“Dreamers” under 18 can apply for loans with the aid of their parents, said the credit union, pointing to figures from the Immigration Policy Center that estimates as many as 50,000 young people in North Carolina may be eligible.
