MADISON, Wis. – Today marks International Credit Union Day around the globe, part of International Credit Union Week this week.

According to data assembled by the World Council of Credit Unions, at year-end 2011 there were 51,013 credit unions operating globally, serving 196.4 million members. Credit unions are now operating in 100 different countries, up from 78 just nine years earlier. Total global credit union assets were $1.563 trillion as of year-end 2011, a figure that has certainly risen since that time; U.S. credit union assets alone have now surpassed $1 trillion.

Credit unions around the U.S. and the world are staging a number of International CU Week-related promotions, including the “Day in the Life of Credit Unions” project in this week’s issue of Credit Union Journal.
