Getting the equation right when it comes to work-life balance

With a strong commitment to a work-life balance, Texas Tech Federal Credit Union offers its 91 employees a generous paid time-off policy. CEO Chris Hutson explained that this offering is in addition to a tiered vacation PTO plan that awards more time for employees with a longer tenure.

“Our team is given a day off for their birthday, up to three days off for bereavement leave and allowed a flexible schedule during holidays to allow for time with family and friends,” said Hutson. “Creating an environment of trust and support for our team is key to our business strategy. We remain intentional about the investment we make into each employee.”

Texas Tech FCU ranked No. 4 overall in the Best Credit Unions to Work For 2018 and came in at No. 2 for credit unions under $200 million in assets.

In 2018, Texas Tech Federal CU launched a new employee onboarding process, which includes new hires spending one day learning the vision, mission and values of the organization.

“Each member of the executive team commits an entire morning to spending time in training with new employees. The executive team shares the vision, answers questions and invites new employees to be a part of the incredible company culture,” said Hutson. “New team members walk away with a clear understanding on where we are and where we are going.”

Every August, the credit union partners with a local nonprofit to help raise awareness about the need for adoptive families in greater Lubbock. This practice includes hosting a gallery of portraits of children that are currently available for adoption.

“Each portrait is accompanied with a story about each child or sibling group with the hope our community will commit to taking care of our kids,” said Hudson. “Our employees have embraced our participation in this campaign each year and have taken the initiative to invite others to come learn about the need of adoptive families.”

Founded in 1959, Texas Tech Federal Credit Union supports four branches and more than 21,000 members with $179 million in assets.
