NASHVILLE-As credit unions enjoy some of their strongest member growth numbers and national publicity in recent memory, NAFCU President Fred Becker is urging the industry to bring the CU message to even more consumers.
"We are in the midst of our own renaissance," Becker told nearly 2,000 credit union professionals and volunteers attending the association's Annual Conference. "Credit unions have become a nationwide success and are here to stay. We need to 'turn up the volume' and make sure everyone hears what we offer."
Becker made four specific recommendations for credit unions to capitalize on this recent recognition:
• Offer products and services on members' terms.
• Develop personal connections that are relevant and meaningful.
• Emphasize the distinctive credit union culture.
• Modernize to keep pace with the changing times.
Advancements in technology, Becker said, will help with that last objective, citing examples of credit unions using new technologies such as online banking, iTunes rewards for members, technology bars, and "pod branching," to attract new members and improve the bottom line.
