Washington — John Sackett, director at Royal Credit Union, was elected to CUNA's board of directors, the trade group announced Tuesday.

Sackett is the first volunteer elected to the CUNA board since the 1996 Renewal Review recommendations changed the election procedures and composition of the board.

His term will run through the 2016 annual general meeting. Royal CU has $1.6 billion in assets and is based in Eau Claire, Wis.

CUNA said Sackett will fill the "District 4, Class C" board seat, which is currently held by Dennis Pierce (who submitted his resignation from the CUNA board, effective June 30).

Pierce's resignation will coincide with his retirement as president and CEO of CommunityAmerica Credit Union, a $2.1 billion institution based in Kansas City, Mo.

District 4, Class C represents credit unions with at least 106,000 natural-person members across the Midwestern states of Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin.

"John has served in an advisory role at board meetings for the past few years as the chair of CUNA's Volunteer Leadership Committee, and we have greatly valued his input. I look forward to his new role as a voting board member," said Susan Streifel, CUNA board chairwoman, in a statement.

Streifel is also president and CEO of $98 million Woodstone Credit Union Federal Way, Wash.
