KATY, Texas-Efforts to form a credit union for professional athletes and their families may be standing on the sidelines.
Stacey Fielder-August, former wife of retired Major League Baseball star Cecil Fielder, was spearheading the effort, telling CU Journal (CU Journal, Feb. 6) a charter was to be submitted to NCUA in February. NCUA, however, reported it has not received a charter submission for Players Choice FCU, the name Fielder-August said had been selected for the credit union, nor was the agency aware of an effort to charter a credit union for pro athletes.
Fielder-August, also mother of Detroit Tigers first baseman Prince Fielder, founded Leagues of Their Own Inc. She was partnering with the Professional Sports Wives Association (PSWA) on Players Choice. Efforts by Credit Union Journal to contact Fielder-August for an update were unsuccessful. PSWA's Executive Director and Founder Gena Pitts said her group is "no longer working with Players Choice CU, and we have not heard from them."
In February, Fielder-August told Credit Union Journal she was leading the CU effort to help professional athletes, their wives, and families avoid financial hardships that often arise from athletes mismanaging their fortunes, a situation Fielder-August said she, too, had faced. The credit union had planned to offer an educational wealth empowerment program to teach pro sports stars and their families how to keep and build their fortunes.
