BETHPAGE, N.Y. – Bethpage FCU is organizing 150 IRS-certified volunteers, including bilingual tax preparers, to help low-income New Yorkers prepare and file their 2012 income taxes at 12 of its Long Island branches.

To be eligible for the free tax assistance under the VITA Program filers must have incomes of $49,000 or less for 2012.

Bethpage’s VITA Program is open to all eligible Long Islanders, including non-Bethpage members.

As part of its VITA program, Bethpage announced its partnership with the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island. The Council said its goal is to help educate eligible taxpayers about the Earned Income Tax Credit, which each year goes unclaimed for thousands, and could bring an additional up to $7,500 into the hands of deserving Long Island families.
