Military appreciation breakfast

Anchorage-based Alaska USA FCU honored more than 60 members of Alaska’s armed forces at its 23rd annual military appreciation breakfast, put on in conjunction with the Armed Service YMCA's annual Salute the Military event.

TruStone fights juvenile diabetes

Employees of TruStone Financial FCU, Plymouth, Minn., raised $724 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The TruStone Financial Foundation matched those funds dollar-for-dollar for a total donation of nearly $1,500 to JDRF.

CU poet

Dave Densmore, poet, commercial fisherman and 20-year member of Wauna CU, wrote a poem about the history the Clatskanie, Ore.-based credit union, telling the story from its modest beginning to a leading financial institution in the communities it serves.

Helping kids learn to love reading

South Jersey FCU, Deptford, N.J., donated more than 750 books from the Little Rhino book series, authored by Ryan Howard, former Phillies first baseman and World Series Champion. The books were donated to nonprofit organizations, including AtlantiCare, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Robins’ Nest, Inc., and The Ronald McDonald House of Southern New Jersey.

5Point recognized for strides against cancer

5Point Credit Union, Nederland, Texas, was recognized for its fundraising efforts for the American Cancer Society. In 2017, the CU raised $515,000 for the fight against cancer, ranking as the highest fundraising team for ACS in the nation. The American Cancer Society honored 5Point Credit Union’s Relay For Life team with a Hero of Research Award.

Desjardins honors

SPIRE CU, Falcon Heights, Minn., won the second place Adult Desjardins Financial Education Award. Sponsored by CUNA, the award recognizes leadership within the credit union movement in the area of adult financial literacy.

A whale of a celebration

San Diego County CU sponsored the 47th annual Dana Point Festival of Whales, a celebration of the annual migration of California gray whales along California’s coastline.

Reading with kids

Staff from RTN Federal Credit Union, Waltham, Mass., volunteered at two local public elementary schools to read to students.

Deseret First expands

West Valley City, Utah-based Deseret First CU celebrated the grand opening of a new building for its Taylorsville branch. Previously at 4645 South 2700 West, the branch moved just down the street to a new facility at 3225 West 4700 South. It features modern conveniences for DFCU members, including friendly teller pods instead of a long teller counter barrier.

Greater Nevada's in-school 'education branch

In 1996, Greater Nevada CU, Carson City, Nev., opened an “education branch” inside Carson High School. The branch continues to give students an opportunity to gain real-world job experience, earn class credit and learn about managing money while attending school. Open to a total of 18 juniors and seniors every year, the banking course is offered within the school’s Career Technical Education series.

Altura's big giveaway

Altura CU, Riverside, Calif., named member Logan Klein as the latest and final winner of the credit union’s “Visit Your Dream Destination” giveaway. The campaign was Altura’s way of thanking members during its 60th anniversary year.

Great Lakes gives back

Great Lakes CU, Bannockburn, Ill., launched a new initiative to expand its community giving this year with “Charity 2018.” GLCU will select five local charities to each receive $2,000 throughout the year. The first donation of $2,000 was made to the Community Action Agency for McHenry County, which assists low-income individuals and families.

Big bucks and a 'Bite of Reality'

Riverdale, Utah-based America First CU participated in the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation’s “Bite of Reality” event at the Sports Leadership and Management Academy in Las Vegas. It provided students a real world simulation, guiding them through life as an adult.
