In response to the Jan. 5 article titled, "Consumers 'Think' Green, But Don't Act That Way," CO-OP Financial Services fully supports the notion of doing our part to reduce the excesses that cause harm to the earth. Late last year, CO-OP opted to discontinue printing its paper directories of over 28,000 surcharge free ATMs and 3,500 shared branch locations. We felt this was practicing good corporate social responsibility on our part.
But, if social responsibility is not enough of a reason for consumers to "act green," credit unions can help their members by positioning products and services that save them time and money, as well as being eco-friendly. For example, before discontinuing printing the ATM directory, we offered more efficient and "treeless" ATM locator services, such as text messaging and GPS downloads of the directory. Our integrated check imaging solutions-including home deposits and envelope-free ATM deposits-save the environment from the excess paper waste generated by traditional deposit processes. Members also save time and money by not having to waste gas by driving to the nearest credit union branch office.
CO-OP is proud to provide these offerings that help position credit unions on par with the green initiatives of the biggest banks. It might even be safe to say that with these highly evolved tools, we have surpassed our competition! These initiatives are good for business, and a must for our environment.
